The Farewell Words of a Departed Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria to His Children

During the funeral of our beloved father, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, one of the bishops read the following last words of a departed patriarch to all his children. These are words of comfort and encouragement to all of us.

I am your father and teacher. All of you my children, listen to my commandments.

Papal Message for the Glorious Feast of the Nativity

My beloved children in the lands of immigration, both clergy and laity.

Peace to you and grace. My congratulations for the Feast of Nativity of our Lord, to Whom is Glory.

Be all well, shepherded by God who keeps you. May we hear all good about you. May you have contemplations in the Glorious Nativity and its happenings.

As for us, I want you not to worry about us – we are well……

The painful circumstances that happened to us have brought compassion upon us from all sides, as well as extreme care and eagerness in protecting the churches, as well as care for our cause. Also, tribulation, by its nature, makes the soul closer to God. And we believe that God is the Protector and Helper, and that “unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” We also believe the promise of the Lord to His Church, that the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. Therefore all are in peacefulness.

God is Present

I would like to thank you all brothers and beloved. I am not only present with you now but you are always in my heart. I lived all my days in your hearts and I am still living there… And when I went to the monastery I took you all with me in my heart and mind. For you I am here, and for you I go there…

Contemplations on the Feast of Ascension

We celebrate two great feasts on Thursday. The first great feast of the Lord is Great Thursday of the Holy Pascha, on which the Lord gave us the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The second is the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord into Heaven, after He spent forty days with His disciples. This Thursday is also a Feast of the Lord called the Feast of Ascension.

The Holy Spirit in the Church of the Apostles

The Holy Spirit was the One who gave the necessary power for the work of preaching. The sending of the Holy Spirit was a promise from the Lord (John 14:26, 15:26, 16:7), however, despite this He said to them, “Behold, I send the Promise of My Fr. upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:29). Where will this power come from? He said to them regarding this, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me” (Acts 1:8).

The Spirit of God was essential to them for they could not work without Him. The Holy Spirit worked with them in preaching and teaching. They waited according to the Lord’s command. Their previous preparation for service which lasted more than three years did not dispense them of the Holy Spirit and His work in and with them. Perhaps these ten days which they waited were days of prayer and hope, from the heart, in preparation for the coming work.

"Come to Me..."

The following was the lecture given by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 in response to the incidents in Alexandria.

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28)

My, brethren:

In my mind so many words to say,
And in my heart even more.
But I prefer to remain silent.
I desire silence so the Lord may speak.
And trust that our silence may be more expressive
God hears this silence.
God hears this silence.
He realizes all its meanings,
And all what we suffer.

How to Benefit Spiritually in the Holy Pascha Week

1. Our Behavior Inside and Outside of Church

It is very noticeable that many people during Pascha Week are one thing inside church and completely different outside. In side church, black curtains, somber hymns, solemn readings, and concentrating on the suffering of Christ. Outside of church, we often laugh, joke around, socialize, think and talk about many worldly issues. We lose all the spiritual depth that we gained inside church. Let us concentrate our thoughts, conversations, and meditations around the events of this holy week and the Passion of our Savior.

Festal Letter of H.H. Pope Shenouda III for the Feast of the Nativity 2009

My brethren and children in the lands of immigration, clergy and laity.

Peace to you from the Lord and grace, with my greetings to you during the Glorious Feast of Nativity. Wishing you in these occasions a new holy life that is better than what it was in the previous year.

I wish to say to you that the birth of Christ was an annunciation of salvation, as the angel said to the shepherds "I bring you good tidings of great joy … for there is born to you this day … a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:10-11) Therefore, in His birth, His name was called Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

Repentance

As sin is separation from God, repentance then is returning to God. God says: "Return to me, and I will return to you" (Malachi 3:7). When the prodigal son repented, he returned to his father (Luke 15:18-20). True repentance is a human longing to return to the origin from which it was taken.

Homosexuality And The Church

I am very glad to have the opportunity to speak to the pastors of the Church of England, I mean, to speak to the angels of the Church and to the ministers of our Lord; those who were mentioned in the Book of Revelation as stars in the right hand of our Lord. I thank God because He has given me a chance to speak to those to whom the Lord said, ‘You will be witnesses to Me.’ ‘Witnesses to Me’ means witnesses to the truth, to the Holy Bible, to the commandments of God, to what the Holy Spirit has said to the churches. I want to speak to you about many things, and hope that should you desire to discuss any point, we will have time to do so.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

THE DIVINITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

St. Peter said that to lie to the Holy Spirit means to lie to God (Acts 5:4), and since He is the Spirit of God and the Spirit of the Lord, so He is God (Job 33:4, 2 Cor. 3:3; Isa. 61:1).

This Comforter, the Holy Spirit descended and came upon the Apostles in the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). He is the One, God promised to send in the book of Joel, “I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions” (Joel 2:28-32), and St. Peter mentioned that this prophecy was fulfilled in the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:16, 17).

He is the Spirit of God and the Spirit of His Son as well (Gal. 4:6), “the Spirit of Christ” (1 Peter 1:11). He is also the “Spirit of Truth” (Jn. 14:17), “When He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…” (Jn. 16:13).

Foundation and Building

Originally published in El Karaza Magains, on Friday, August 5, 2005

I would like to meditate with you in the teachings of St. Paul the Apostle about the spiritual building, as mentioned in his first Epistle to Corinthians, where he said: “According to the grace of God which was

given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.” (1 Co 3:10-13).

So what are gold, silver, and precious stones? What is straw, and what is fire?

Paschal Letter of H.H. Pope Shenouda III for the Feast of the Resurrection 2007

My beloved children in the lands of immigration, clergy and congregation,

Grace to you and peace from our Almighty and Holy God. Sincere greetings to you for the glorious Feast of the Resurrection. May God bring this occasion upon you every year while you are full of goodness and blessing.

Christ, to whom is glory, rose despite the tight security over His tomb. He appeared to His holy disciples and strengthened their faith. He spoke to them about matters pertaining to the kingdom of God. He granted them the authority of the priesthood, and gave them the responsibility of pastoral care of His Church and His people. After forty days of visiting them, He arose to heaven and sat at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19).

The Holy Spirit with the Disciples

Jesus Christ, after His resurrection, had spent forty days with His disciples the saints talking to them about the things pertaining to the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3)…afterwards and prior parting ascending to Heaven, He told them “tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (Lk. 24:49).

So what was this power which they needed to await? He told them “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Yes, they couldn’t start their service preaching spiritual work unless they were endued with that power from on high; the Holy Spirit being upon them…

Paschal Letter of H.H. Pope Shenouda III for the Feast of the Resurrection 2006

My beloved children in the lands of immigration, Priests and congregation.

I congratulate you all for the Feast of Resurrection, wishing you all on this Feast peace and edification, with all goodness and blessing. I always love to hear good news about you regarding your spiritual growth and active service in the church, and building the Kingdom of God on earth.

Live in the joy of the Resurrection, for the Resurrection is joy in all aspects.

We rejoice firstly in the Resurrection of Christ, for by His resurrection, He trampled upon death and became "the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep." That is, the First in the procession of those who rise from death in all generations. And just as He rose, we will also rise and be victorious over death in the Resurrection.
